Toronto Ultra “Tilt” Call of Duty League Trophy

We had the pleasure of working on a project for our local Toronto Call of Duty League team, the "Toronto Ultra," during the Major V tournament. This project encompassed various media, including 2D art concepts, 3D modeling and rendering, 3D printing using both SLA and FDM techniques, gypsum cement, automotive paints, clear coats, and mixed media like a giant acrylic diamond.

Our primary goal was to create a captivating and sizable trophy that would not only represent the team's mascot but also be weighty. The mascot, Tilt, draws inspiration from Toronto's fascination with squirrels. The project began with a 2D sketch, which underwent numerous iterations until we achieved the perfect representation. We then translated these 2D concepts into 3D models and renderings, which later became the basis for 3D prints used in the final trophy.

The core component of the trophy, Tilt, was primarily crafted from solid SLA resin. This choice was driven by our need for substantial weight and a desire for precise details, especially in Tilt's face and tail. Although traditional FDM printing could achieve this, our tight deadline precluded the additional labor required to achieve the same level of smoothness and crispness. This is why we opted for SLA printing.

The SLA printed pieces also included the acorn diamond topper and the gold baroque trim encircling the base. To ensure a perfect fit for the acrylic diamond in Tilt's hands, we sourced the diamond before finalizing the 3D model. FDM printed acorn toppers were quickly produced to verify the fit before sending them for SLA printing.

To maximize efficiency, we used FDM printing for the base while the rest was being printed in SLA resin. To ensure the base's sturdiness and weight, we integrated "struts" into the interior of the base, creating a lock-and-key mechanism for the concrete mix to prevent spillage. We also designed keys for the baroque trim to ensure a perfectly symmetrical installation. Additionally, the base featured threaded steel rods to securely attach Tilt to its base.

Our 3D print finishing process involved a range of sandpaper grits, starting at 220 grit and progressing up to 1000 grit to achieve a smooth surface suitable for painting. Bondo spot putty was used to eliminate layer lines and support holes during the initial post-processing phase. We applied a coat of primer, followed by white enamel paint. The finishing touches included automotive gold paint sprayed through an HVLP gun and a final coat of high-gloss clear coat.

The finished trophy garnered considerable attention at the Call of Duty League Major V. It was showcased on the live stream and presented on stage in front of thousands of fans—an unforgettable experience. In the end, the New York Subliners clinched the Major and carried the trophy home!

Our collaboration with OverActive Media in bringing this project to life was truly memorable, and we can't wait to see what the future holds!
