3D Printing - Casting - Mold Making - Production

Pepe from Morgan’s Organs

It all starts with an idea…

The creator of comic series “Morgan’s Organs” approached us to create a custom model of one of his characters “Pepe”. Turning an idea from a 2D image and turning it into a physical 3D object was something new for us and it was a really fun process.

We started with a 3D model which was done by Luis Gustilo. After a rough draft, some adjustments were made to get a cleaner draft done. XTC Resin was used to create a glossy finish and hide the print lines in the model. A custom display stand was also 3D modeled. A paint trial was done and it was ready to mold!

The molding process was a brand new experience for us, molding and casting such a small piece with protruding details like the arms created problems in getting a finished cast. After much brain storming and help from our friends at Sculpture Supply Canada, we had our plan.

We constructed thin “wings” underneath his arms out of Apoxie sculpt. This would act as another form of spout as air moved up and resin would take it’s place, it would ensure that the figurines hands would come out properly.

A mother jacket was made using Free From Air from Smooth On, which eventually failed due to resin escaping and bonding to the jacket itself. A new mother shell jacket was constructed using plaster bandage which was the perfect idea thanks to some quick thinking!

We poured casting resin in and started the clean up process. Just like every clean up, it starts with washing the cast with soapy water to remove the release agent from the model. This will allow paint to stick to the model easier. After cutting the resin “wings”, it was time for a light sanding over the seam line.

Painting was the next step and required many different paint applications using acrylics through hand brushing. They were ultimately finished with a glossy clear coat to finish the model off.

These were displayed and sold at Toronto Fan Expo 2018 at Morgan’s Organs booth.
