3D Printing - Casting - Mold Making - Production

Frame from "Friends" TV show

This replica was used on Friends as a picture frame on the door. I made this as a House Warming gift for one of my friends and I got a lot of interest in it so I decided to make more!

The Build

I started by printing out a picture of the frame and sculpting with oven bake clay. Once I was happy with the  result, I transferred the sculpt to the oven and let it solidify. After that was done, I took sand paper and sanded it smooth using different grits. I used Smooth On Mold Star 30 as the silicone material to capture the details. After that dried, I had a perfect negative imprint of the object in the silicone and I was free to cast! I use Smooth Cast 305 casting resin from Smooth On to create my replicas as it was a fast cure time and every detail is captured.

Process!

The collage shows the steps from sculpting, pouring silicone into a box mold, the completed mold and a finished cast!

Painting

After the cast is cleaned up, next is paint!

I start with adding 2-3 coats of primer in either gray or white. I paint the frame using 2 tones of yellow acrylic paint. The first one is a bright yellow and the other is a darker yellow in the crevices. This allows the paint to stand out and add dimension to the curves. After a few layers and letting it dry, I cover the frame in a thick clear coat to protect it from damages or paint chipping!
