Halo 5 Magnum - M6H2 Personal Defense weapon

The Halo 5 Magnum is a project needed to complete our Halo Master Chief costume to use as a side arm. We brainstormed different ways on how to make it come to life and ended up 3D printing it! Link to the 3D model is at the bottom of the page!

The project started with a raw 3D print that came in 7 parts. After gluing all the sections together, we started using filler spray and Bondo spot putty to fill in the cracks and seems. After many sessions sanding, we had a pretty nice finish. We 3D modeled a new threaded barrel attachment to better fit the game as well as 3D modeled a flashlight holder with a thread inside the gun itself to secure the light. The next step was to add etched lettering and numbering using our vinyl cutter. We later added a textured grip using a spray on stone texture paint.

After all the sanding, it was finally time to mold and make copies of this gun! We used Mold Star 30 from Smooth On to create a 2 part, box mold. There is always something to learn when using these materials. We found out that Rustoleum Clear Coat inhibits the curing of platinum cure silicone. We had to re-do a section but after re-spraying it with a Krylon Crystal Clear, it was fine!

After letting each side dry for 24 hours, we were ready to start casting these using Smooth Cast 300 casting resin from Smooth On as well. It has a very fast cure time which lets it cure in a few minutes.  After washing and sanding the resin cast, we were ready to paint!

We used various tones of acrylics to achieve the gun metal and black paint job. As well as taking advantage of weathering techniques with black shoe polish, acrylics and spray paints to achieve a realistic weathered look.

I would like to thank my wonderful interns Kendra, Alexys and Alyssa from Sheridan College's Advanced Special Effects Make Up, Prosthetics and Props program for all the help on this project from sanding to molding and casting!

Below you will find a photo compilation of our progress.
